Stardust to Stardust [Artist Statement + The Complete Exhibition]

I can think of no thing more humbling than positioning our human lives against the grand scale of the universe itself.  I explored the magnitude of this juxtaposition by examining images of gorgeous nebulae and clouds of interstellar dust.

I was struck first by their beauty and majesty, and then by their aesthetic similarities to some life forms on Earth.  Some of the nebulae are translucent disc shapes with brilliant color reminiscent of microorganisms, flower petals, or certain ocean life such as jellyfish.

Others appear to have the density and dullness of dirt and rock formations and evoke images of dead coral reefs.

It has always been easy for me to notice and appreciate sublime natural beauty here on earth, but to see these forms repeated in the heavens transcends and expands my sensibility of divine creation.

The magnitude of the universe is unfathomable to me, and feelings of both peace and wonder arose at the extreme and obvious brevity of human life, making it that much more precious.  Knowing that these heavenly bodies are comprised of the very matter of our human bodies and that the forms are evocative of those we know, speaks more clearly to me about our divine nature than anything I could possibly imagine or create with my two hands.  The very nature of creation is divine.  And we are it.  We are stardust.

"We are stardust.
We are golden.
And we've got to get ourselves
Back to the garden."

"Woodstock" -- Joni Mitchell
